Fiber
Fiber optics pipes the light ...and bends the rules.
Lamp placement has traditionally been located at the point of illumination. In recent years, the market has seen the advent of remote lamp sources where light is piped through fiber optic cable from an illuminator housing to the point of illumination.
One of the marvels of fiber optic lighting is the ability to begin a system with a conveniently serviceable lamp and ballast distancing most heat and hardware and then piping that light through cable to diverse points, precisely where needed. Cable is now highly flexible and unusually cool to the touch. So, at the point of illumination, there is negligible heat. And special filters perform a little optical trickery: make the light look incandescent (when it is really metal halide), and color (when it is really white).
The opportunities for incorporating fiber optic technologies in lighting schemes are endless. It lends itself best to applications where the designer seeks to:
Illuminate fragile or perishable articles with negligible heat, while virtually eliminating ultra-violet and infra-red radiation. This is possible because the lamp source and power supply are remote and filtered; they are not at the point of illumination. Safely light rare book and print displays, retail casework with refrigerated goods, chocolates, fine silk scarves or cosmetics.
Illuminate non-accessible locations where lamp maintenance would otherwise be problematic. Conveniently light vaulted ceilings, capitol details, chandeliers, exterior building signage, paths, trees, swimming pools, fountains.
Illuminate a veritable galaxy of light points from a single lamp source, conserving energy and simplifying lamp maintenance. Create star ceilings and floors, exterior step lighting, display case lighting.
Illuminate in color. Paint with light through the use of a color wheel, an easy color-change system for all interior and exterior settings: retail, restaurant, hotel, residential and landscape.
