The Project
Enhancing a grandeur 6,000 pound hand-carved marble fountain for homeowners in High Point, North Carolina.
This isolated “island" was a recent acquisition by the North Carolina homeowners, and they knew that it had exceptional potential on many levels. Most of the real decisions entailed blending with the surroundings and providing high visibility across the expansive front lawn without disturbing the sightline and symmetry of the existing construction. The five-ton fountain consisted of a six-foot diameter solid-marble bowl with matching fountain and 18-foot diameter copia, turning over 20,000 gallons of water per hour.
The Goal
Enhancing the newly installed fountain as an exciting focal point both day and night, while blending seamlessly with the surroundings.
A lot of homework and consideration was involved for Bryan Edwards, of Crystal Cascades, in selecting the components needed for his customer’s project. The biggest influences came from recognizing the clients’ requests and what was needed to complement the surrounding landscape. Edwards created the solution by blending an assortment of different and interchangeable nozzles into the design and combining that with the color changing aspects of the lighting. “Experience with these designs has given me the understanding that the lighting is a huge part of the overall effect,” Edwards adds.

The Choice
WDM Colorwaters, 12 Channel Controller, 24 Channel DMX controller, and lots of extension leader cables…
The Underwater LED Fixtures were precisely what Edwards needed, and proved to be ideal on several levels. The system enabled Edwards to synchronize the pulsing of lights to the beat of music, provided varying intensities of every color and within each individual fixture, and “get that kind of intensity and vibrancy,” he describes, “to that is nothing short of amazing.”
He continues, “…the overall capabilities of the DMX Controller system is the result of years of experience, insight, and understanding. While I am grateful for those involved with the design and engineering, the instruction manual could have been much more helpful. It took the end user and myself about a month to really nail down those capabilities.“
The Result
Superseded all hopes and expectations; and has driven a lot of traffic to the site…literally.
Edwards and his clients were immensely satisfied with the end result. “So much so, that we have continued to play and tweak the display. [The fountain] never seems to get boring nor fails to amaze us with its color-changing capabilities…There have been several occasions when traffic literally backs up for over a mile. It has been a daily experience to have someone pull up in the driveway and inquire about replicating the concept,” he gushes. He goes on to explain that the dramatic result of this project has led to continued concept expansion with the current owners and has produced other property projects for Crystal Cascades.
“Not only would I recommend them [the ColorWater fixtures]….I already have, and currently have a similar fountain system on order just outside of Chicago. The results are not only impeccable, but dramatic, and captivating. It has proven to be so far beyond expectations that the lighting has become as much of a satisfying aspect of the installation as the dynamics of the water, and the majesty of the hand carved marble itself.”
