SpotLight On... Trafalgar Square

Crystal Cascades

Trafalgar Square has treated itself to a recent eco-friendly facelift in recent months. The latest step in the total transformation was revealed this past May to the public with Grade II- listed fountains. A major element to the fountain refurbishment was the installation of an LED lighting system. Though the particular lighting source has not been revealed, the Greater London Authority boasts a state-of-the-art system that produces custom color-changing effects and will save thousands of pounds annually in running costs. An estimated 13 million visitors from all over the world will get the chance to see the “green” makeover as part of the overall preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games hosted by London.

London Mayor Boris Johnson commented, “This is the final major piece of the transformation of one the greatest public squares in time for the 2012 Games. It brings together the old and the new in a way that London does so well and 60 years since work began on the present layout, it is a brilliant way to help kick off the Story of London festival - which is about celebrating the capital's past, present and future.”

The GTA began work back in March to replace a previous system that was beyond repair. The renovation included stone and metal work restoration and the installation of energy-efficient lighting and a more powerful pumping system. In an effort to reduce carbon footprint by 60% by the year 2025, this project is projected to reduce an estimated 16,400 kg (36,156 lbs) of carbon emissions and save thousands of pounds annually.

In a recent trip to London, I was able to snap a few photographs of the reinvigorated fountains the day after its public unveiling. Living in London just two years earlier, I remember Trafalgar square as a pigeon-infested passing point to West End or to the more attractive BA London Eye landmark. Trafalgar Square has regained attention in its own right once again. With the capability to produce spectacular light visuals, both residents and visitors can pause for appreciation that the square deserves. With plenty of open space, one would be tempted to take a seat on the square steps with a fish-n-chips take-away dinner from the nearby Sherlock Holmes pub and enjoy an evening light show that’s great for both the environment and one’s wallet.
